With a developmental ethos shared by numerous trained practitioners worldwide, Forest School traces its origins to the outdoor lifestyle known as friluftsliv, prevalent in Scandinavia where it first emerged. Introduced to the UK in 1993, it has flourished ever since.

Beyond mere knowledge acquisition, this process supports learners in social, emotional, spiritual, physical, and intellectual growth, fostering a safe and non-judgmental environment for experimentation and risk-taking. By instilling a profound connection to the world and one's place within it, Forest School cultivates problem-solving skills, self-belief, and resilience through real-world challenges. Here, risk is viewed holistically, encompassing more than physical danger—it's an integral part of growth and development.

Forest School in the UK may appear as a modern concept, yet it draws upon a deep-rooted tradition of outdoor education stretching back to the 19th century. Influential figures across Europe and the UK, including Wordsworth, Ruskin, Baden Powell, Leslie Paul (founder of Woodcraft Folk in 1925), Kurt Hahn (founder of Gordonstone and a pioneer of outdoor education centers), Susan Isaacs, and the Macmillan sisters, all contributed to the groundwork for what we now recognize as Forest School.

In the 1970s and 80s, as the education system gravitated towards a more teacher-centric approach focused on outcomes, particularly in numeracy and literacy, there emerged a shift. This period saw the inception of the national curriculum. In response to this trend, the 1990s witnessed a surge in alternative educational models, within which Forest School found its place.

Our instructors are trained to adapt activities to suit the weather and ensure the safety and comfort of all participants. The Forest School ethos has six principles, which were agreed by the UK Forest School community in 2011.

1. Forest School is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observations and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School.
2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
3. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
4. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
5. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
6. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning.
